4/1/2024 0 Comments Lyon healy guitarThe guitar is extremely light, which I'm sure adds to the tone. Open, dry, woody, and extremely sensitive, I understand why violins and cellos are made from such wood, not to mention classic American jazz guitars like the Gibson L-5 and Super 400, and D'Angelico New Yorker. This maple instrument, however, is just wonderful. I have always been a fan of Brazilian rosewood on old parlors, and I currently am going through an expensive restoration on an 1898 Martin 1-21, which I plan to keep. I guarantee satisfaction on both the tone, and the imminent playability of this beautiful instrument. This guitar, however, does have an EXCEPTIONAL voice. It's a ladder braced instrument, and I wasn't expecting an exceptional voice. The prior owner Randy Cole has this to say about the guitar "I was quite shocked when I strung this up and tried it. The maple has some nice figure and although these are often thought of as cheaper guitars with ladder bracing, they can sound great for blues and ragtime! This is an example of a prewar Lyon and Healy built Aquilla guitar with the Spruce/Maple tonewoods and fancy purfling. RIYL: Lyon and Healy manufactured many guitars during the depression era under several brand names.
